I have been embarrassed yet again by Discover Card holding up a checkout line at Whole Foods Market because they cannot seem to get Discover Card to work with their Apple Pay. This has happened twice now. The first time I got it to blink but it would not show up on the register as paid. It accepted my payment on my phone but not at the register and blinked. So odd. I then had the cashier transfer my transaction over to the customer service at the front of the store. It still would not work. I then called Discover Card to see if my card had a fraud alert on it. They acted like it should have worked and I had no fraud on my card so it was not on hold.

I used to be a big fan of Whole Foods and still love them more than Sprouts that sells food under the disguise that it’s natural. Sprouts takes the Apple Pay just fine though but I could do without the chemicals they put in their turkey. I really wish I could get this to work at Whole Foods and it’s frustrating. Especially since I drive 10 miles or so to get to Whole Foods. Target, Kroger and Walmart are closer and sell a lot of the same things now so I do not go there as often unless there’s a promotion like this one and that is why it’s such a big fail.

After the first embarrassment I thought I would try again a few weeks later thinking they had finally cleared up the problem. I went in my local Whole Foods tonight and it did not work again. Trying to get rewards or use coupons should not be this complicated especially at a high priced place such as Whole Foods. I have two Discover It cards and neither would work with the Apple Pay. Then I thought I would try to use my American Express Card which actually has a promo with Whole Foods right now to get $10 back if you spend $60. My luck I was $1 short of $60 and by this time there was a LINE waiting for me to use my Apple Pay. So I used my AMEX card easily on Apple Pay but did not get the $10 back because I was $1 short. Thanks, Discover! You have ruined my day. Just wish I knew who to be mad at either Whole Foods or Discover… or Apple Pay.

Wonder why I am trying to hard to use Discover Card at Whole Foods?
Huge Rewards. I realize Discover is not as popular as Chase or one of the big banks but they have an extremely generous offer going on right now where you can get 22% or so back for using Apple pay. This is if you have a double cash back promotion on top of the Apple Pay promotion stacked up until the end of the year. Cardmembers who pay with their Discover card using Apple Pay will automatically earn an extra 10% Cashback Bonus on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases. Discover it Miles, Miles and Escape cardmembers will earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases.

On a post on Reddit from a month ago people were complaining they could not use their Discover Cards at Whole Foods with Apple Pay. It seems to be WHOLE FOODS fault from what I have read. Shame on them. Expensive groceries and look at you crazy when you use a coupon then can’t even get your payment systems to work. I am beginning to really dislike whole foods. I will eat white bread and never go there again. One Reddit use posted “Same thing happened to me today in Austin, went to Trader Joe’s first, Apple Pay worked, then went over to Whole Foods Arboretum and doesn’t work. It blinks and says done but cashier says he got nothing. This is with Discover Card.” I just hope that Target gets Apple Pay soon! I like their meat better anyway.
