Best Credit Card for Families Who Travel

Best Credit Card for Families Who Travel

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card was launched roughly a year ago, and has proven to be an incredibly popular product. We normally look at credit card values in the context of what a card has to offer for the primary cardmember as you’ll see in our top cards of 2022. However, sometimes it makes sense to look at the overall value of a card for a family.

Is there such a thing as a perfect credit card for families? Well, I’d argue the Capital One Venture X is unbeatable in that regard.

The Capital One Venture X pays for itself

First for some background, the Capital One Venture X has a $395 annual fee. However, in reality the card shouldn’t cost anyone nearly that much, as there are endless reasons to pick up this card. Among other things, the card offers:

  • A $300 annual travel credit redeemable through Capital One Travel; this should be good as cash to most cardmembers, as it can be used for flights, hotels, or rental cars
  • 10,000 anniversary bonus miles, which can be redeemed for $100 toward a travel purchase, or can be transfered to airline and hotel partners
  • Amazing airport lounge access, including a Priority Pass membership, Plaza Premium lounge access, and access to Capital One Lounges
  • Primary rental car coverage
  • Cell phone protection
  • Hertz President’s Circle elite status
  • 2x Venture miles per dollar spent with no caps on earnings and no foreign transaction fees, making this one of the best cards for everyday spending, and one of the best cards for foreign purchases
  • The card is also offering an excellent welcome bonus of 75,000 Venture miles upon completing minimum spending, and anecdotally lots of people are having success getting approved.

Go here for 75,000 mile sign-up bonus with the Capital One Card or read our full review here.

This is truly a card that pays for itself — the $300 annual travel credit and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles should more than cover the annual fee on an ongoing basis, and then the rest is just having your cake and eating it. Did we even mention you get early access to concerts such as Taylor Swift?

Why the Capital One Venture X is perfect for families

While the value of the Capital One Venture X is there for just a single user, what makes this card exceptional is the unrivaled value it offers to families. Capital One lets you add up to four authorized users to the Venture X at no extra cost, and best of all, each authorized user gets many of the same perks as the primary cardmember.

This is ideal for families who want to add their significant other, children, parents, etc., to their credit card (Capital One also doesn’t have a minimum age to add authorized users). Authorized users receive:

  • All the same lounge access perks as the primary cardmember, including a Priority Pass membership, access to Plaza Premium Lounges, and access to Capital One Lounges
  • Earn 2x Venture miles on spending with no foreign transaction fees; the primary cardmember is on the hook for paying and racks up the points, but this is a great everyday spending card to give to a spouse or children if you’re looking to maximize rewards in an easy way
  • The same protections, including cell phone protection, primary rental car coverage, etc.
  • Hertz President’s Circle elite status
  • In one example you can add your parents to the Capital One Venture X, so that they can get airport lounge access. If you have teens you can add them.
  • Go here to apply and get 75k miles

While there are several good premium credit cards, other popular options don’t let you add authorized users for free:

  • The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card (review) charges $75 per authorized user
  • The Platinum Card from American Express charges $175 to add a total of up to three authorized users (Rates & Fees)
  • So by comparison, being able to add four authorized users at no cost on the Capital One Venture X is unbelievably generous.

Bottom line

The Capital One Venture X has an amazing value proposition in general, but the area where the card really shines is for families. That’s because you can add four authorized users to the card at no extra cost, and they get many of the same perks as the primary cardmember, including airport lounge access. You also get to bring up to 3 people into a lounge with you when you fly at any Priority Club lounge (some are saying more than that). They are also adding a new Capital One Lounge in Denver and Las Vegas!

Being able to gift airport lounge access to family and close friends is an awesome opportunity, especially since it doesn’t come at any sort of opportunity cost. So if you are considering this card, be sure to think of it beyond just the value to the primary cardmember.

7 Best Gas Station Loyalty Programs

7 Best Gas Station Loyalty Programs

Gas prices peaked out this summer but they are still high. Let’s be real – no one likes wasting money on gas. There are so many ways to avoid high gas prices you just have to open your phone apps or look online. The national average pump price continued its recent trend by dipping three cents over the past week to hit $3.76.

The cost of gasoline has risen in recent weeks as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine applies pressure on global oil markets. At the same time, the U.S. has begun lifting mask mandates instituted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, a move projected to spur consumer spending and travel.

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline at all-time highs again this week according to AAA.

With rising gas prices many drivers are being more selective when it comes to filling up. Comparing prices at the pump and researching loyalty programs are some ways to get ahead of the game before the big summer travel hits and we see over $4 at the pump.

The great thing about gas loyalty programs is that you can normally stack them on top of credit card rewards programs such as the Chase Freedom or Discover IT cards. These two cards are known to give at least a full quarter towards 5% cash-back on gasoline purchases each year.

Here are the best gas station loyalty programs:

1. Get Upside App (Variety of gas stations)

GetUpside partners with businesses to give you cash back on everyday purchases. Most of them are gas stations, but in some areas there are restaurant, grocery and convenience store offers as well. It’s best to claim offers just before you make your purchase. That’s because GetUpside puts a timer, which typically lasts a few hours, on each offer.

When you sign up via this Upside Referral Link and enter Invite Code B263E2, you’ll get an extra 15 cents per gallon cashback on gas – on top of whatever great offer you find in the app.

Before you claim an offer, make sure to comparison shop. If the deal is for gas, use an app like GasBuddy, or take a look at local prices on Google Maps.

2. Shell Fuel Rewards

Among the major national brands, Shell takes the top spot. With its program, members always save at least three cents a gallon at participating locations. They’re also rewarded when they shop at select retailers, restaurants, grocery stores and more. Rewards are redeemed by swiping the Fuel Rewards card at the pump.

Learn more about Shell Fuel Rewards here with a 25 cents a gallon bonus.

3. Speedway Speedy Rewards

Favored by 28% of GasBuddy respondents, Speedway’s rewards program beat the national big brands. Members earn 20 points per dollar on in-store purchases and 10 points per gallon on fuel purchases. Points can be redeemed for free stuff using Speedway’s mobile app. Featured items include food, beverages, fuel discounts and gift cards.

4. BP Driver Rewards

BP’s fuel savings program ranked second among the nationwide chains in a recent survey. Members earn 10 cents off per gallon for every $100 spent on BP fuel. On its website, BP says savings can add up to $600 a year! By linking your BP Driver Rewards account to a credit card that you use at the pump, you’ll earn rewards automatically.

Learn more about BP Driver Rewards here.

BP Gas station

5 Kroger

Kroger, the largest grocer in the United States took the #1 spot in the grocery category for their points program.

  • The fuel program along with KrogerPlus cards allow you to receive savings of up to $1.00 off per gallon one one fuel purchase up to 35 gallon at Kroger, Turkey Hill and participating Shell stations.
  • For each increment of 100 fuel points (up to 1,000 point) you will receive $0.10 per gallon.
  • Earn points in current month and redeem thru each month.  Each month is a separate accumulation period.  Months’ points don’t combine in a single transaction.

6. Thorntons

For regional brands, GasBuddy respondents favored Thorntons as their top choice. With locations in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.

7. Sheetz & Wawa

Sheetz was a top regional pick and now has more than 600 locations across six states — Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. While Wawa is along the East Coast of the United States, operating in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Florida.

A Wawa Credit Card may seem like the greatest option for additional rewards unless you mainly just want free coffee. A Wawa retail card will give you 25¢ per gallon for the first two months and 5¢ per gallon after that. While it may seem like good rewards, there’s also a pitfall as you can use this card at Wawa gas stations only.

ExxonMobil Speedpass+ participated in the Plenti rewards program, which lets you earn points at one place and use them at Plenti partners such as Macy’s. One point is awarded for every gallon of fuel purchased and two points for every dollar in eligible non-fuel purchases. Members simply enter their phone number or swipe a card at the pump. The bad news is that Plenti is shutting down later this year so we have taken this off the list.

Who would you like to see on this list? Maybe Buc’ees out of Texas or for Exxon to revamp their program?

Lyft: 50% Off One Ride On Election Day

Lyft: 50% Off One Ride On Election Day

Lyft is doing its part to get people to the polls on Tuesday, November 8th.

The rideshare company is offering a 50% discount (up to $10) on Election Day to riders who use the code VOTE22.

The discount is for people who cite transportation issues as a barrier to voting. According to the company, an estimated 11.2 million older Americans have travel-limiting disabilities that make it difficult to leave home and 29% of young people said they didn’t vote because they didn’t have a ride.

“We believe that everyone’s voice – and vote – deserves to be heard, and transportation should never be a barrier,” said Lisa Boyd, Director of Social Impact at Lyft. “We’re thrilled to play a part in helping communities to the polls this Election Day.”

The code can only be used during voting hours.

The Offer

  • Lyft is offering 50% off one ride on election day with promo code VOTE22, up to $10 off.

Head over here for more election day specials including a $30 off from Grubhub.

Uber may match this as they offered a promo code in 2021 for voting at some locations.

Capital One Cardholders Get Exclusive Ticket Access for Taylor Swift’s ERAS TOUR #Swifties

All right, Swifties: Hit pause on Midnights for just one maybe a minute and check your wallet for a Capital One card.

On Tuesday morning, Taylor Swift announced the details of her highly anticipated nationwide tour next year: “The Eras Tour” kicks off in March 2023 and runs through early August. Thanks to the tour’s sponsorship from Capital One, eligible Capital one credit and debit cardholders will get exclusive, early access to presale tickets starting Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The presale begins Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. at each venue’s local time and runs through Thursday, Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. local venue time, or while supplies last. While pricing information isn’t available just yet, this is a chance for nearly all Capital One cardholders to snag the best deals or premium tickets before they’re released to the general public on Friday, Nov. 18.

Go here to learn about the venture X card and how it can get you in lounges and Taylor swift VIP access.

Capital One cardholders will be required to use the first six digits of their Capital One card number as the promo code to gain access to the presale, and then must use their Capital One card to complete the purchase.

For more Capital One presale information, including all of the announced U.S. tour stops, head to www.taylorswift.com/events. International tour dates have not yet been announced.

What Capital One Cards Are Eligible for the Presale?
Capital One says that The Eras Tour presale is open to all eligible U.S. Capital One Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cardholders. That means if you have a card like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, among many others, you are set.

A Capital One spokesperson says that even those with co-branded credit cards like The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card are eligible. The only cards that don’t make the cut are private label cards that are issued through Capital One such as The Neiman Credit Card and others that aren’t explicitly co-branded by Capital One.

Bottom Line
Taylor Swift is hitting the road next year with “The Eras Tour” kicking off in March 2023. And nearly all Capital One cardholders – including those with either the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, among many others – can get early, exclusive access to tickets for her concerts around the country.

The presale for Capital One cardholders begins Tuesday, Nov. 15 while supplies last. Mark your calendars!

New 6% Cash Back Card Coming

New 6% Retail card from U.S. Bank coming

U.S. Bank’s most higher earning rewards card has been the Cash Plus card where you can pick your own 5% categories. Now they are emailing consumers a preview of the new 6% back card at selected retailers right before the Holiday season.

With the new U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Reward Visa Signature Card “your one card for everywhere” you can select the retailer you want to earn 6% back. This would be great for anyone who spends at one retailer that is on the list. It doesn’t stop with that because it gives:

6% cash back on combined eligible purchases each quarter with two retailers you choose ($1,500 limit)

3% cash back on eligible purchases each quarter in your choice of one everyday category, like wholesale clubs, gas and EV charging stations, or bills and home utilities ($1,500 limit)

1.5% cash back on all other eligible purchases

This is significantly better than most rewards cards with the 1.5% back and 3% and 6%.

Cash+ from U.S. Bank Review : Pick your own categories for 5% and 2% back

US_Bank_Cash_VisaOne of my favorite cards from last year was the U.S. Bank Cash Plus Card which let us pick from two 5% categories each quarter and then an extra 2% back categories on top of that.  The card has changed its terms since I first applied where it does not give you as many great choices to make the most cash back each quarter but it is still useful.

With the Cash+ Card you get 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in joint net purchases (purchases minus returns or credits) in your chosen 5% categories. Purchases over $2,000 earn 1% cash back. The 2% cash back is unlimited and all other net purchases earn 1% cash back.

February 18 was the first day to sign up for the next quarter 5% and 2% cash back.  Register now to make sure the purchases made in your selected categories are eligible to earn 5% or 2% cash back between April-June 2015. The Cash+ card lets you pick from Gas Stations, Grocery Stores, and Restaurants for the 2% rewards. Pick one of those then go over to the 5% categories of “Select Clothing Stores”, Gyms/Fitness Centers, Fast Food, Furniture Stores, Car Rental, Charity, and Movie Theaters.

usbankcashpluschoosecategoriesNotice that they included Restaurants in the 5% back group before but moved it to the 2% because people spend a lot at dine-in places such as Chili’s. They also include Pizza Hut as a 2% Restaurant instead of Fast Food. Not sure how that is possible but OK.

If you want this card for the Amazon 5% back included in bookstores that only includes Amazon Kindle Book purchases not on the main site. You may also be disappointed in the “select” clothing stores as that will not include online retailers such as Amazon.

As for Department stores included would be the following and their dot com counterparts: Bealls, Dillard’s, Soma Intimates, Belk, Macy’s, Tongass Trading Company, Bergner’s, Elder-Beerman, Von Maur, Bergners.com, Magic Mart, Bloomingdale’s, Getzs, Nordstrom, Weaver’s, Herberger’s, Nordstrom Rack, Younkers, Bon-Ton, Off 5th, Boscov’s, JcPenney, Parisian’s, Boston Stor, Kohl’s, Ruddy Duck, Saks Fifth Avenue, Carson’s, Larson’s Department Store, Loehmann’s and Sears.

The absolute worst category for most would be Movie Theaters which no one makes hardly anything back on but the credit card companies use this one as a feel-good type marketing ploy. You notice Chase and Discover banks also use this one often. Yes, while movie theaters are expensive with things like cola and popcorn the average person would make much more cash back on groceries and restaurants. The real everyday spending types of purchases.

My Cash+ Visa categories chosen consisted of 5% on Fast Food and 5% on Select Clothing Stores. I figured I would hit up clothing stores at the mall more than Department stores and I am sure everyone by now has a Macy’s retail card so you don’t need the Department store category. I choose 2% on Restaurants in case I hit up a Fast Food place thinking it’s in that category and it will at least get the extra 1% for a restaurant. Grocery stores I am already getting 6% Cash Back with an American Express Blue Preferred. The electronics stores does cover Apple Store but I buy most of my electronics from Amazon and it’s not included anywhere sadly.

When I first applied for this card it was a glorious piece of plastic. It shined in its beautiful blue design and saved me five percent on my favorite expense which is restaurants and dining. Come 2016, It’s dwindled down to one of the worst cards in my wallet. I am not even sure I want to use it anymore. I have done some trials where I have used it at fast food places such as Cowboy’s Chicken or Chipotle and neither register as a fast food establishment and instead code as restaurants getting me only 1% back instead of 5%.

When shopping for clothes it’s even more of a let down because it only considers a few handfuls of retailers part of that 5% and I wasted purchases with Guess! Jeans and Rue 21 which it did not count as their select clothing stores. I had called before I made the clothing charges and the reps said you just have to test it out but another rep read off several that I would never attempt to shop at so I think it’s time to tear up this joke of a card and quit wasting my time. Overall this is a mediocre card from U.S. Bank (just like every other card they offer) to have if you plan your spending strategy accordingly to maximize your cash earning power.

[Live] Amazon Prime: Buy $50 Amazon Giftcard or Reload, Get $12.50 Promotional Credit

[Live] Amazon Prime: Buy $50 Amazon Giftcard or Reload, Get $12.50 Promotional Credit

AMAZON PRIME DAY is a two-day sales event where Prime subscribers can find hundreds of exclusive deals on products available through the online retailer, though there are lots of other discounts for nonmembers. This year, Prime Day is set for July 12 and 13, but you can already get plenty of slick deals on some of our favorite stuff.

Amazon has a special reload offer beginning on Prime Day (July 12-13) for Prime members. This deal is live, it’ll begin on Prime Day:

  • Beginning on July 12am PDT, Prime members get $12.50 in promotional credit with a $50 Amazon Gift Card purchase or Amazon Reload when you use promo code EGCPRIME22.
  • The $12.50 promotional credit will then be valid for the weeks after Prime Day, presumably.
  • Go here for the direct deal landing page

This is always the most popular deal of Prime Day. Seems like this deal might be valid for household Prime members as well, but we’ll have to wait and see as they excluded household Prime for the other two deals.

Last year they offer two $40/$10 Amazon gift card deals, one as a lead-up and one on Prime Day itself. For now it seems like they’re only doing the Prime Day offer this time, though it’s slightly better at $50/$12.50. The $12.50 credit will likely be valid for a few weeks after Prime Day.

Here are some other Prime Day Deals being offered by Amazon right now:

  • If you do not already have Amazon Prime you can get it free for a 30 day trial (then cancel before it renews).
  • Free Grubhub+ for a year if you’re an Amazon Prime member. Read our review of Grubhub.
  • Get four months of Amazon Music Unlimited for free (Save $35.96)
  • Get three months of Audible Premium Plus for free (Save $44.85)
  • Get select streaming service subscriptions for $0.99 for two months through Prime Video (Save $8 to $20)
